Avoid weeds in the garden to save water:

An introduction:

Weeds are those undesired visitors in a garden that pop up anywhere in between the lawns or in the shades of shrubs and other plants. Usually weeds are the native plants, which are best adapted to the environment where they grow. Sometimes they have been introduced in the past for culinary, medicinal or decorative purposes. The seeds that are produce from the weeds can lie dormant in the soil for many years, germinating when it is cultivated, or imported with new topsoil. Weeds are found to compete with the other garden plants for space, light, nutrients and above all water. Weeds need to be eradicated so that they won't swamp the more delicate specimens of a garden.

Weeds and water consumption:

The conservation of water is a good practice whether or not there is a drought. It has been found that in America, landscape-watering toilets use the largest amount of water for domestic purposes alone. Especially during the summer time nearly 40 % of the municipal water supplied to a house is used for outdoor irrigational purposes. In the peak summer days the water consumption of garden can reach as much as 3,000 gallons a day per home. One of the significant methods of reducing the water consumption of a garden is the control of weeds. Generally most if the species of weeds are deep rooted and they can effectively exhaust deep profile water needed by other plants and grass. Also keeping the garden free from those water-consuming weeds will not only save a considerable percentage of water but also let the other plants grow peacefully with less competition for nutrients, light and space.

Weed control in the garden to reduce water consumption:

Horsetail, Hedge and field Bindweed, Couch grasses are the three of the most common variety of weeds that are found in a garden. One very effective organic method of controlling the weeds is through the use mulch. Mulching is not only effective in controlling the annual varieties of weeds but has also additional benefits of soil moisture, keeping the soil at a more uniform temperature, preventing erosion, and creating a more attractive garden appearance.
