Managing household waste

One of the ways to better organize your home is to demarcate a zone for collection of household waste. It is estimated that on average, one person generates approximately 2 pounds of waste per day. This refuse then travels to overflowing landfill sites. Since households are main generators of waste, it is prudent to organize household waste collection sites.

Streamline trash collection

Start with a central trash bin strategically located in the kitchen. The kitchen generates the maximum amount of organic waste in the house. This kitchen refuse in the form of vegetable and fruit peelings, coffee grounds, tea bags, and similar food leftovers should be dumped in the main trash can. This trash can should be the main receptor of kitchen effluvia. Again, this trash can should be substantially huge to better contain kitchen refuse. Line the trash can with a plastic bag so that dripping and wet kitchen waste does not stick and spoil the trash can sides. In a similar fashion, place small waste bins in each room and the bathroom. These waste bins can hold small trash that is generated by each household member. These waste bins can be emptied either daily or weekly into the main kitchen trash can. This procedure of small bin trash directly flowing into the central trash can will streamline your trash collection. When the big trash bag is full, you can take it to the kerbside for garbage collection.

Another option - Composting

Alternately, you may opt to compost your household organic waste. This will primarily consist of kitchen refuse and paper, napkins and other biodegradable material that has been discarded. Composting is now possible even in small spaces with the availability of efficient commercial compost bins. Composting may require extra effort in the form of segregating wet or compostable material from dry refuse. Composting has the advantage of being environment-friendly by reducing overall waste mass sent to landfill sites.

Taking care of household trash is thus a good way to organize your household along efficient lines. A rationalized approach to trash collection and trash disposal will upgrade your home environment. A direct consequence of this trash disposal strategy is a cleaner and neater organized household.
