Water is life for all living bodies and plants as well. Adequate amount of moisture in the soil is very much essential for the plants to grow healthy. Rainwater is a valuable natural resource that can be collected for household use. Using rainwater has a lot of disadvantages including reduction in the water bills, provision of a chlorine-free supply of fresh drinking water along with a reduction in community infrastructure costs. The opportunities for the collection and utilization of rainwater vary according to the location. The usage of rainwater for gardening purposes is best. The whole process can be done in three simple steps that include capture, diversion, and storage. Harvesting rainwater can reduce the use of drinking water for landscape irrigation. Coupled with the use of native and drought-tolerant plants, rainwater harvesting is an effective water conservation tool because it provides free water that is not from the City's municipal water supply. More over there are many benefits to harvesting rainwater. Water harvesting not only reduces dependence on groundwater and the amount of money spent on water, but also reduces off-site flooding and erosion by holding rainwater on the site. However rainwater is found to be appropriate for large-scale landscapes like parks, schools, commercial sites, parking lots etc. For small-scale residential landscapes and home gardens the concept is new and is yet to be applied.
