Concrete Overlay
How is concrete overlay prepared? Earlier, a concrete floor was given a cement-based overlay to give it an improved look. Today, most concrete overlays consist of a blend of polymer resins, which also include cement, sand and any other material that may increase the resistance or improve the quality of the overlay. Layers of such overlays can be laid; the thickness of each would depend upon the homeowner as well as the designer. Advantages of concrete overlays If an existing concrete slab or part of the floor has broken down and needs to be repaired or replaced, it can become a cumbersome task and could lead to further damage. It could further add to costs and may also turn out to be quite a messy task. The better way out is to opt for concrete overlay, which could give not just the floor, but the entire home a decorative makeover at a much lesser cost and span of time. One could add patterns, textures, and even use colorful designs to enhance the look. Types of overlays Overlays are available in many forms. These include stampable overlays that give the benefits of stamped concrete but take up lesser time to install. Micro toppings and skim coats are the next type of overlays, which are somewhat similar to decorative toppings and are applied in thin layers to beautify the space using colors. Spray-down systems involve spraying concrete with an air-powered gun and use of a trowel to smoothen the concrete. Stencils or paper may be used to create attractive floor designs. A self-leveling overlay is a method where concrete material is poured on to the surface and allowed to settle down on its own. Decoration can be incorporated or this may be used as a preceding layer to tiles, carpets or any other form of floor coverings.
